Rheumatoid Awareness Day is observed on February 2, giving people with the chronic illness known as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or rheumatoid disease, a day of recognition. Rheumatoid disease is more than arthritis. While the disease usually affects joints, the disease process is not related to osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects an estimated 1.3 million adults in the United States.1 The condition can have a profound effect on many aspects of daily life, and is often poorly understood by those who do not have direct experience it. The good news is that important advances have been made in the management of RA: use of more effective drugs earlier in the course of RA reduces symptoms and joint damage, and allows some patients to achieve a remission (little or no active disease).2
Rheumatoid Awareness Day is observed with campaigns for raising awareness and educating about rheumatoid disease. The patient community and the public are encouraged to get involved by sharing educational resources, promoting awareness messages via social media, joining live online chats, and participating in fundraising.
TheRAconnection and Women magazine are valuable resources for individuals with rheumatoid disease and arthritis and offer educational content, inspiring stories, useful tips, and a community where individuals with rheumatoid disease can share information, support, and inspiration.
